Donald “Don” Harteau, 91, passed away on Monday, October 10th, 2022. Don was born on November 11th, 1930, in Green Bay, to the late Everett and Mae (Smith) Harteau. Don was a graduate of Green Bay East High School, class of 1948. Following high school, Don started an extensive and impressive career of 42 years, proudly serving his country with the United States Army Reserves from 1948 and then retiring from his military Civil Service duties in 1990. During this time, he married Ilse Quiehl at Grace Lutheran Church on September 10th, 1960; together they celebrated 53 years of marriage.

During his early years, Don was a TV and Hammond organ repairman, despite his hearing loss. He was always ahead of the times with technology, even teaching computer classes at the senior center when computers became a popular household item. Don was a jack-of-all trades guy who loved to tinker with anything that needed fixing. He enjoyed spending time up north in Dunbar, exploring Marinette County with his boys, rabbit hunting with his beagle and deer hunting. Don also enjoyed downhill skiing into his 80’s, reading, daily crosswords, watching Jeopardy, and traveling. Don, Ilse, and the boys traveled extensively while he was in the military making many memorable moments together while on the road. Don was a long-time member of the Y’s Men’s Club at the YMCA and was involved with the HLAA-Fox Valley Chapter (Hearing Loss Association of America).

Don and Ilse were blessed with one granddaughter, Abby, who filled their lives with great joy and every moment of their free time was spent with her. In later years, Abby found great reward returning the nurturing sentiment to her “Oma” and “Opa” by caring for them at their bedsides.

Don will be sadly missed by his sons, Patrick (Molly Kleczka) Harteau and Thomas Harteau; granddaughter, Abby (Josh) Besson and great-grandson Owen Donald Besson, along with a great grandbaby on the way; sisters, Gladys Cavil and Arleen Duchateau.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Ilse; an infant son, Gordon Harteau; his parents; sisters, Ruth Simons, Edith Schoen, June Simkunas; brothers-in-law, Melvin Schoen, Jerry Simons, George Simkunas, Fred Duchateau, and Roland “Rollie” Cavil.

Per Don’s wishes, there will be private family services held in his honor. Entombment of his cremated remains will be at the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum.
