LaVerne A. (Brey) Wertel, 92, Green Bay, passed away on Friday, May 28, 2021.  She was born on Sept. 2, 1928, in Branch, WI to the late Michael and Anna (Gerl) Brey.  On June 9, 1948, LaVerne married John “Jack” Wertel at St. James Catholic Church in Cooperstown.  Together they opened Wertel’s Tap in 1968.   Jack preceded her in death on July 1, 1989.  LaVerne continued to operate with her son and daughter-in-law until she sold in 2005.  She remained a very intricate part of the bar life, still bartending occasionally until 2019.  She will be remembered by her sometimes off colored jokes and her huge personality.  Anyone you talk to can usually come up with one of LaVerne’s stories.  Many of us who have worked side by side with her over the years are proud to call her mom, mother-in-law, grandma or friend.

LaVerne will be deeply missed by her sons, Richard “Dick” (Sharon) Wertel, Thomas (Pat) Wertel and Robert (Sonja) Wertel; daughter-in-law, Pam Thorpe; grandchildren, Sara Anderson, Abby Wertel, Jayson (Brenda) Wertel, Tracy (Ryan) Chernick, Jamie (Stephanie) Wertel and Robert Wertel Jr.; 9 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; sister-in-law, Virginia Brey; and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, LaVerne is preceded in death by her son, Michael Wertel; brothers, Wilbert Brey, Edwin (Florence) Brey and Norbert (Clara) Brey.

Visitation will be at Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St., from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Parish Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2021.  Visitation will continue at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 2040 Hillside Dr., from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2021, with Rev. Mark Vander Steeg officiating the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m.  Entombment will be in Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum.  Online condolences may be expressed at www.Prokowall.com.
