Shirley Nitka, 94, Green Bay, went to be with the Lord, Friday, May 13, 2022. Shirley was born April 22, 1928, in Green Bay, daughter of the late Clarence and Gladys (Schoch) Van Schyndle, and graduated from East High School. She married John Nitka on Nov 14, 1953, at St. Mary of the Angels Church. He preceded her in death on March 5, 2009. Before starting a family, Shirley worked for Wisconsin Public Service and also for Northwest Engineering.

Shirley’s life focused much on faith, family, and fishing. She attended St. Mary of the Angels church for nearly 70 years, was in the choir for many of those years, was a woman of prayer, hosted home Bible studies, and served as leader of the Mission Room. She was also a member of the Third Order of Secular Francisans.

Shirley was committed to her family with unwavering love, sacrifice, and much hard work.  Her excellent skills as seamstress, baker, and gardener blessed her family many times over. She was always involved with the lives of her children, even into their adult lives.

Shirley loved fishing and knew many of the hot spots on Shawano Lake. She spent countless hours with fishing pole in hand, enjoying the peace of the outdoors.

Shirley was loved by many and an example to all. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her four children, Pat (Mike) Hoffman, Tom (JoAnn) Nitka, Janice (Tim) Mandich, and Dan Nitka; one daughter-in-law, Pam Nitka; 15 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and brother, James Van Schyndle.

Besides her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by two sons, Robert and Steven, and one sister-in-law, Diana.
