Thomas John (McCullen) Johnston, age 89, left his earthly dwelling place on Thursday, November 23, 2023, after a life filled with challenges and rewards.

Tom was born on February 11, 1934, in DeKalb, IL to the late Veronica Crescentia (Thomas) and Patrick John McCullen.  Upon his dad’s death in 1936, he was raised by his mother and grandmother in Rockford, IL. In 1942 his mother was remarried to Raymond Johnston who adopted Tom. Tom grew up with a step-brother, Ray Jr. close in age to him and was joined by three other siblings, Ruthanne, Ronald and Gerald Johnston.

Tom graduated from Rockford West High School Class of 1952, attended Marquette University where he graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and subsequently enlisted in the Army Signal Corps. He spent those years largely at Ft. Hood and was discharged in 1959.

In October 1959, Tom married Delores Chiodini and together they had six children, Marguerite, Patrick, Gregory, Theresa, Catherine and Pamela. He and Delores divorced following the deaths of his three youngest children. In 1974 he married Karen (Angiletta) Johnston and to this union were born Jeremy and Joshua Johnston.

Tom was employed as an Industrial Buyer at Sundstrand Aviation and later, Atwood Industries, retiring in 1993. In 1997, he and Karen made Green Bay, WI their home.

Tom enjoyed his retirement years in the Green Bay area and had many interests including canoeing, trains, Green Bay Stamp Club, Barbershop singing with Baylanders, and volunteering as a tutor for Literacy Green Bay. As his health declined, he loved trips out to Barkhausen, Lily Lake, Voyager Park, rides along the Fox River to a favorite coffee shop in Wrightstown, Sunday drives to Algoma, Kewaunee, Two Rivers and Sturgeon Bay. A kind and gentle man, he always enjoyed life’s simple pleasures.

Tom is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen; his children Marguerite (Timothy) Lindsay, San Gabriel, CA, Patrick (Dawn) Johnston, Rockford, IL, Greg (Barbara) Johnston Chatsworth CA, Jeremy (Heidi) Johnston, Minneapolis, MN, and Joshua Johnston, Beverly Hills, CA. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Lindsay Johnston, Chelsea (Nathan) Fischer, Joanna Johnston, Madeline Lindsay and Keith (Michelle) Lindsay, Marlow and Leo Johnston; and three great-grandchildren, Ava Marie, Preslee and Miles.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step brother, Ray, Jr.; brother, Ronald; and brother-in-law, Eugene Canfield.
