Vernon E. Scherer, 85, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2019. He was born in Green Bay on December 19, 1933, to the late Edmund and Lorraine (Berendson) Scherer. Vernon was a graduate of East De Pere High School. He served his country during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Army, from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1955. On April 22, 1961, he married the former Betty Vanden Avond at Holy Martyrs of Gorcum Church and they were blessed with 58 years of marriage. He founded VS Machine in his own garage and grew the business until he was able to pass it to his sons; then began his next venture of acquiring the Pulaski airport, which he remained a partner in until his passing. After Vernon’s retirement, he and Betty were able to do much traveling, including going to China and climbing the steps at the Potala Palace in Tibet. When they weren’t traveling, amongst his many day to day adventures, they could be found enjoying their free time at the family cottage in Sand Bay.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty; his children, Steven Scherer, Dennis (Cindy) Scherer, and Donna (Todd) Skaletski; nine grandchildren, Shannon Scherer, Jessica (Jeff) Neta, Scott Scherer, Nicole (Keith) Hettmann, Stephanie Scherer, Jennifer (special friend Wyatt) Scherer, Danielle (special friend Eric) Scherer, Rebecca (Jeremy) Elliott, Adam Skaletski; five great-grandchildren, Sienna, Addisen, Noah, Isaac, and Raelyn; one sister, Veda Scherer; three sisters and brother-in-law, Marion (Gene) Havlovitz, Pat Baumgart, and Joann Vanden Avond; along with nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Vernon was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Francis Vanden Avond, Phil Baumgart, and Becky (Mike) Seidl.

Friends may gather at Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St, on Thursday, September 12, 2019, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Parish Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday morning at St. Willebrord Catholic Church, 209 S. Adams St, from 9:00 a.m. until the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Andrew Cribben, O. Praem, will preside. Burial in the Allouez Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of floral expressions, a memorial fund will be established in Vernon’s name.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital, for all the care they gave to Vernon and his family.
